You may have read the title to this blog in disbelief, but it’s true – the humble 20p could save you from a hefty fine, and help keep you safe on the roads, too.
The legal limit for tyre tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm for both the front and rear wheels. If your tyres are found to be unsafe, you risk three penalty points on your driving licence, and can also be fined up to £2,500 per tyre – a possible total fine of £10,000! Not to mention the safety implications of having worn wheels.
And that’s where your loose change comes in…
The 20p test is a quick and easy way to see if your tyre tread exceeds the minimum legal tread depth. Take the coin and place it in the outermost groove of the tyre. If the border around the edge of the coin is hidden, the tread is adequate, but if it’s visible, it’s time to get a new tyre.

During this year’s Tyre Safety Month, TyreSafe revealed that over 10 million UK motorists drove a vehicle with an illegal and dangerous tyre during 2016. Their new survey, in partnership with Highways England, exposed that more than 27% of tyres were already illegal when they were replaced during the year.
