What is the MOT extension and what does it mean for drivers?
As lockdown measures continue to be eased across the UK, the government has announced that mandatory MOT testing will be reinstated in England, Scotland and Wales from 1st August – therefore ending the temporary grace period introduced on 30th March.
In our latest blog, we look at who is covered by the extension – and why it’s important to keep your car in a safe condition!
What is the extension period?
The MOT extension or ‘grace period’ gives a six-month extension to vehicles with MOT certificates set to expire between 30th March and 31st July 2020. These emergency measures were introduced at the end of March in line with the government’s advice to “stay at home” due to the coronavirus pandemic; it also allowed garages to dedicate their services to keeping essential services and key workers moving.
The legislation was initially due to remain in place until March next year but the Department for Transport (DfT) has now confirmed that testing will return to normal from 1st August. If your MOT test is due to expire on or after this date, you need to book an MOT test before your certificate expires as it won’t be covered by the grace period.
Keeping your car safe and roadworthy
Since the exemption, MOT-test volumes have declined by 70%, and many industry experts have voiced their concerns over what this means for driver safety.
While cars due an MOT before 31st July will have their certificates extended for six months (effectively making them valid for 18 months), at Quick Lane we still recommend that you book your MOT test in, for that added peace of mind!
We are here to support you as we begin to venture out more and more – and while we appreciate that we may not be top of your list of places to visit, you need to make sure your car is a-okay before setting off on a big trip, due to the long period of being off the road. Irrespective of whether the extension applies, having an MOT test will make sure your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. Don’t forget that penalties still apply to vehicles found to be in an unsafe condition, regardless of the extension!
Last but not least, due to the extension, there is likely to be an influx of cars requiring MOT tests this autumn, so it’s good to be ahead of the game to ensure your car is ready and waiting when that epic road trip calls!
